From 'Insurgent' to 'Hunger Games': 8 YA Worlds You May Want to Visit
The best movies transport their audiences to exciting and unique worlds, and lately, adaptations of popular Young Adult books have been working overtime in the world-building department. If these worlds were real, which ones would you want to visit? Check out our handy guide to help you decide.
The Harry Potter Series (2001-2011)
The Place: The Wizarding World
Exciting Features: From shops filled with arcane curiosities, to pubs stocked with rich and strange food, the magical world hidden under our own has plenty to see and do.
Most Popular Destination: Skip the busy and overpriced streets of Diagon Alley for the more rustic charms of Hogsmeade.
If You Do One Thing: While you’re visiting Hogsmeade, you’re just a quick jaunt away from Hogwarts Castle! But don’t show up at the end of the term; that’s when really bad stuff tends to happen.
Twilight (2008)
The Place: Forks, Washington
Exciting Features: Friendly people, a laid-back small town atmosphere and sparkly vampires. Oh, and sexy shirtless werewolves.
Most Popular Destination: The forest, which is misty and mysterious and full of places to hold hands with your vampiric lover.
If You Do One Thing: Play baseball with the local vampire population. There is life before, and life after, such a game.
Ender’s Game (2013)
The Place: Battle School
Exciting Features: Micro-gravity combat training – with lazer guns? Yes, please.
Most Popular Destination: The Battle Room, where you can experience the thrill of war without actually, you know, dying.
If You Do One Thing: Hang out with that Ender Wiggin kid. Scuttlebutt around the school suggests that he’s going places.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe (2005)
The Place: Narnia
Exciting Features: Talking animals, magical gateways, ice witches, creepy satyrs and everything else you’d hope to find in a magical land.
Most Popular Destination: Is Aslan the talking lion there? If so, that’s the most popular destination of the moment.
If You Do One Thing: Take a voyage on the Dawn Treader and see the outskirts of the land. Only the tourists hang around Mr. Tumnus’ place.
The Hunger Games (2011)
The Place: Panem
Exciting Features: For a land that is only a century removed from a devastating war, Panem is home to many districts with unique things to see and do! And, of course, keep an eye out for the military police on every corner. They’re keeping an eye on you, after all.
Most Popular Destination: The Capitol, where all of the cool rich people wear crazy clothes, gorge themselves with delicious food, and casually ignore the rebellion brewing around them.
If You Do One Thing: Maybe you should check out those Hunger Games everyone is always talking about! They’re pretty popular. Or, uh, maybe not.
The Maze Runner (2014)
The Place: The Glade
Exciting Features: The Glade is the perfect place for the thrill-seeking variety of tourist. For those who like a little “life or death” in their R & R, you’ll take a scary subterranean freight elevator ride to your destination. Then, if you don’t get crushed by the maze that constantly changes its shape, you may get stung by its resident robot-beast hybrids!
Most Popular Destination: You don’t go to the Glade for the variety of activities -- you go for the people! After all, everyone is an instant friend when everyone has amnesia!
If You Do One Thing: Make it to the end of the maze. Trust us: Things only get crazier.
Divergent (2014)
The Place: Chicago
Exciting Features: Chicago already has a lot to offer, but these days, it’s a little more, er, dystopian.
In between the familiar landmarks, you can swing by the city’s five factions: Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, and Candor.
Most Popular Destination: Although all of the factions offer their unique charms, you have to find time to visit Dauntless. Think of it as a summer camp for brave people. If roller coasters are getting a little stale, this will scratch your thrill-seeking itch.
If You Do One Thing: You’ve gotta’ jump off a moving train to prove your fearlessness. Ever since Tris did it, it’s become the thing to do.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)
The Place: Camp Half-Blood
Exciting Features: When you’re not mingling with the super-powered spawn of Greek gods, you can partake in all of the usual outdoor activities, like archery, sword fighting and wall climbing (complete with lava pit).
Most Popular Destination: Although not as exciting as other areas within the camp, everyone is going to swing by The Big House, which is home to the camp’s administration. Make sure you find some time to party with Mr. D, the god of wine and parties.
If You Do One Thing: Here, there’s a whole world of mythology out there to explore. Make sure you find a reason to go on an adventure; don’t stay cooped up in your cabin.
