Biography
Known as one of the most successful and impactful rock bands of all time, Aerosmith began in Massachusetts in 1970, when Steven Tyler's band Chain Reaction played a show with Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton's band Joe Perry Jam Band. The two groups were so taken with each other's musicianship that they decided to combine their lineups and form a single band. While living in a house together in the Boston neighborhood of Allston, the group settled on Tyler's suggestion for the name Aerosmith, and their first set came a few months later at a high school in nearby Mendon. By 1972, the band signed with Columbia Records, and they released their self-titled debut the following year. Several more albums followed, including 1974's massively successful Toys in the Attic. Aerosmith would remain at the top of their game for decades to come, but they would also endure hardship, such as when Joe Perry left the band in 1979 to form his own band, Joe Perry Project. He would later rejoin the group in 1984. Additionally, all five members of the band would complete drug rehabilitation programs during the mid-'80s. Hugely successful hit records would continue to be the band's calling card, however, notably 1989's Pump and 1993's Get a Grip. Aerosmith would also top the charts with the power ballad "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," from the movie "Armageddon" (1998). In 2004, the band solidified the blues roots that had always influenced their sound with a full blown blues album, Honkin' on Bobo. In 2012 they released their fifteenth studio album, Music from Another Dimension. During this period, Tyler took time away from the band to serve as a judge on the reality competition "American Idol" (Fox 2002-2016).
