15 Great Ensemble Comedies You Need to Watch: From ‘Ghostbusters’ to ‘The Hangover’
‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ stars Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Adam Scott and Chevy Chase. Each funny on his own; all much funnier as a team. Here are 15 other comedies that display amazing ensemble chemistry.
The Hangover (2009)
Sure, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis deliver plenty of laughs. But Ken Jeong, Jeffrey Tambor, Heather Graham, Rob Riggle and Mike Tyson all have their moments in this raunchy Vegas comedy – the first of three successful films.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Out of all of Wes Anderson's flawless casts, this may be his best. Ralph Fiennes leads the charge as a debonair hotel concierge. Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton and newcomer Tony Revolori are just some of 'Budapest's' other funny faces.
A Fish Called Wanda (1988)
Although we could easily name any Monty Python movie, we're choosing this offshoot, starring troupe members John Cleese (who also scripted) and Michael Palin, as it has the bonus of Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin "Don't Call Me Stupid" Kline.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Some of film's sharpest comedians – Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Danny McBride, Steve Coogan, etc. – bring their A-Game to Stiller's edgy satire. But Robert Downey, Jr. and an nearly-unrecognizable Tom Cruise steal every scene they're in.
Ghostbusters (1984)
Seemingly all of New York is a comedy genius in this spooky summer classic. From the three main protagonists -- Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis -- down to the smallest bit players, everybody’s got a side-splitting line or physical gag.
Bridesmaids (2011)
Female comedy ensembles are, alas, a rare thing. 'Bridesmaids,' with priceless turns by Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson, will hopefully open the door to more. Get excited to see what Wiig and McCarthy reuniting with their ‘Bridesmaids’ director for an all-female 'Ghostbusters' reboot.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Thanks to the Coen Brothers’ nihilistic humor, this comedy’s fans abide most dude-iciously. And can you blame them? Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi and John Turturro really tie the room together.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Will Farrell was already a star before 'Anchorman,’ but ‘Daily Show’ regular Steve Carell was a revelation as an idiot weatherman. Paul Rudd and David Koechner round out this classy quartet, with a slew of famous faces filling out the cast.
Ocean’s 11 (2001)
Equal parts caper and comedy, Steven Soderbergh assembled an A-List ensemble for this remake of the Rat Pack classic. George Clooney leads the crew as the suave and capable Danny Ocean, with Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Julia Roberts roped into Danny’s plans.
Waiting for Guffman (1996)
Christopher Guest and his stock company – Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Parker Posey and so on – also soar in 2000's 'Best in Show' and 2003's 'A Mighty Wind.' But their first mockumentary packs in the most laughs-per-minute.
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Mel Brooks is king of the ensemble comedy. Some prefer 'Blazing Saddles' (also ‘74) over this 'Frankenstein' parody; we say a cast that includes Gene Wilder, Teri Garr, Peter Boyle, Madeleine Kahn and Marty Feldman simply can't be beat.
I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988)
It's relentlessly silly, but this spoof of 1970s blaxploitation films put director/star Keenan Ivory Wayans – indeed, the entire Wayans family – on the map. Bernie Casey, Isaac Hayes and Jim Brown expertly lampoon their own tough guy personas.
Airplane! (1980)
Incredibly, before 'Airplane!', no one thought of Leslie Nielsen as a comedian. Other once-serious actors, including Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves and Robert Stack, join the fray. Then there are all those cameos. Even Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is funny!
Office Space (1999)
TPS reports. 37 pieces of flair. Dippy workplace jargon becomes comedy gold as writer/director Mike Judge gathers together the funniest character actors you never heard of, adds Jennifer Aniston to the mix, and produces a cult classic.
This Is the End (2013)
Judd Apatow turned many of today's best comic actors into stars. This wild apocalypse flick features nearly all of them – Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson and more – as awful versions of themselves.
