Family movies are full of wonder again. Not only is Steven Spielberg back this summer with one of his old-fashioned, kid-friendly blockbusters in The BFG, but we've seen and will continue to see movies this year that amaze and warm the hearts of moviegoers of all ages. One of the most anticipated, especially after the release of a new trailer, is surely Disney's Pete's Dragon.
The remake of the studio's 1977 animation/live-action hybrid is a lot different from the original. Gone are the songs, and so far it seems the title creature doesn't talk, but this isn't just a serious dramatic take on a silly but beloved kids' movie. It's another sort of kids' movie, one that seems to exist somewhere between Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Disney's Jungle Book remake.
Yes, Disney has two feral-child movies this year, but the enormous success of the first will hopefully have audiences wanting more of the same. This one has a human ensemble that includes Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley and Karl Urban sharing the screen with child actors Oona Laurence and Oakes Fegley, who plays Pete.
We get plenty of family films and animated features all the time, but there's something about this year that's showing promise for almost uniformly greater quality and more wholesome material. The hugely successful Zootopia and this week's new release Finding Dory plus this fall's Moana are proving the Mouse House alone is at a new peak with animated-feature output.
Could live-action also be at a peak? As its title indicates, we'll be presented with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them this November. But no need to wait that long, as there are clearly fantastic beasts all over the cinema this year, and you can find one right here:
