If you're looking for family entertainment or high-octane action, you should be covered this week with two terrific new releases on DVD and Blu-ray this week.
Disney's Bolt can't quite compete with Pixar's superlative animation, but when it comes to cartoon movie pooches, few can rival this one for utter charm and lovability. Miley Cyrus and John Travolta headline a great voiceover cast, playing stars of a TV show about the adventures of a girl and her superpower-endowed pup. Bolt's doggy mug shows every bit of devotion, excitement and sadness as he gets lost and ends up in New York, meets new pals in a clawless cat named Mittens and a hamster, and finally makes his way back to Hollywood to the little girl who adores him.
Although Daniel Craig's second outing as superspy James Bond doesn't measure up to his first, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace is still a worthy entry in the series. The action is non-stop, which is great if you don't care about following the plot that makes about as much sense as the movie's title, involving a secret eco-terrorist organization that plans to take over Latin America by controlling land and water rights (ehh?). Craig's as badass as before, but weak links are Olga Kurylenko as the charmless and somehow sexy-less Camille and mousy, bland Mathieu Amalric as a villain who triggers about as much terror as a houseplant. That aside, it's a fast-paced, tightly wound solid sequel.
