While those rowdy and raucous Expendables are still itching to blow up more box office dollars, several new films are arriving in theaters this weekend hoping to make sure that doesn't happen. Let's take a closer look at a very busy late-August weekend at the box office…
What's The Scoop: The folks who brought you Epic Movie and several other cheesy spoof flicks have returned with this "comedy" that spoofs the recent on-screen vampire invasion, focusing the most on – what else – Twilight.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Because for some reason kids flock to these movies, and the extra Twilight-related vibe should help bring in some of that much sought-after Twi-hard crowd as well.
What's The Scoop: Rapper-actor Bow Wow leads a pretty funny ensemble cast in this comedy about a kid who must survive a three-day weekend in his neighborhood after his opportunistic and nosy neighbors learn that he's holding a winning lottery ticket.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: The kids still dig Bow Wow, right? And who doesn't love that Brandon T. Jackson?
What's The Scoop: In this extremely hard-R remake of the campy 1978 horror film, a sudden underwater tremor frees a clan of nasty, man-eating prehistoric fish that cause all sorts of havoc for unsuspecting victims. And it's all in 3D!
Why It Might Win The Weekend: 3D horror films have done real well at the box office in the past, though the film's R rating will definitely hurt the final numbers. Plus this flick is just nasty with a capital N. Those with weak stomachs may want to steer clear.
What's The Scoop: Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston star in this romantic comedy about an unmarried woman who uses a turkey baster to get pregnant and the best friend who replaces her choice sperm with his own.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Despite the really ridiculous premise (seriously, I would kill my friend if they did something like that – wouldn't you?), this is easily the most accessible film of the weekend (based on cast and premise), and it's probably your best bet if trying to decide between all these choices.
My Prediction: This is a tough weekend because we have several films all geared toward different audiences, and it's really about which audience will show up the most. Because of the Aniston factor and my fondness of everything Jason Bateman does, I'm going to go with The Switch for the win, though in all likelihood the Twilight factor will put Vampires Suck in first.
What about you? Which film do you think will win the weekend?
