The Alamo Drafthouse has quickly garnered a reputation as one of the greatest movie theaters in the history of mankind…or at least the history of movie theaters. With their signature events, ample food and drink selection, and strict no-talking policy, they make obsolete all tawdry multiplexes and completely redefine the movie-going experience. Here’s what they’re up to this week!
Alamo Mason Park Houston 9/7 7:30pm
Action Pack: Grease Sing-Along
The summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to enjoy some fantastic summer lovin’. The Alamo Drafthouse invites you to jump into Greased Lightening, or whatever your hot rod may be named, and come experience one of the most beloved musicals of all time. All your favorite song lyrics will appear on the screen karaoke-style. As if that weren’t enough to make you feel like a Danny or a Sandy or to give you multiplying chills, the Drafthouse will also hand out balloons, combs, and candy cigarettes in the theater. Don’t be a square; come see why Grease is still very much the word.
Alamo Ritz Austin, 9/7-9/8 Midnight
The Late Show: Timecrimes
There is a prevailing misconception that great sci-fi is dependent upon an enormous production budget. In 2007, Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo proved yet again that the genre could be a glorious junction between technology and intensely human stories. Timecrimes blends time travel conventions with tropes of a Hitchcock thriller and is then generously seasoned with darkly comedic elements. The overall effect is something stunningly unique with enough twists and turns to delight even the most jaded of thriller and sci-fi fans. Beware the man with the bandaged face.
Alamo Slaughter Lane, 9/8 10:00pm
Action Pack: Boy Band Sing-Along
We may look back in shame at the golden age of boy bands. We may even flirt with assigning them the dubious distinction of being the worst thing that ever happened to music. However you may land on the love ‘em/hate ‘em continuum, the fact is that some of the songs emanating from these frosted-tipped sirens of the 80s and 90s are impossibly catchy…insidiously catchy. Don’t tear up my heart, give the Alamo just one night to prove that belting out pop ballads and anthems is your prerogative. You know you want it that way.
Alamo Ritz Austin, 9/10 10:00pm
Music Monday: God vs. Rock
There’s a lot of talk these days about which things God hates. The whims of the almighty are constantly being appropriated to serve various political agendas. This is of course a ridiculous practice, as we all know the only thing God truly hates is rock-n-roll, right? Given how prevalent this purportedly evil music genre has become, God simply has no time to hate on anything else. The Alamo Drafthouse’s own Lars Nilsen compiles some of the most hilariously paranoid anti-rock propaganda films that illustrate the ongoing battle between conservative religious values and things that rule. The evening will even include snippets from Rock: It’s Your Decision, possibly the greatest, most awful rock-slandering Christian mouthpiece film ever ill advisedly created. Come enjoy the hysterically out of touch antics and let your blasphemous chuckles echo to the rafters like a glorious Iron Maiden track.
