Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx stars opposite Quvenzhané Wallis as millionaire Will Stacks in this month’s ‘Annie.’ He joins a long list of movie moneybags who bring their own special riches to the movies they’re in. Here’s a look at ten of our favorites.
Longfellow Deeds in ‘Mr. Deeds’ (2002)
When pizza maker Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler) inherits a $40 billion media company from his dead uncle, he knows just what to do with his new-found wealth: Install a Hawaiian Punch water fountain in his Uncle’s mansion. Sandler’s ‘Deeds’ is a remake of the 1936 Frank Capra’s classic, ‘Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,’ starring Gary Cooper as the titular heir.
Randolph and Mortimer Duke in ‘Trading Places’ (1983)
Two millionaire investment bankers (Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy) bet one whole dollar they can prove which is better -- nature or nurture -- by switching the lives of two people at opposite ends of the social scale. When their subjects (Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd) catch on to their plan, however, it’s the Dukes who find themselves in need of a handout.
Thomas Crown in ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ (1999)
In this remake of the Steve McQueen classic, Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) may be wealthy enough to buy anything he desires -- but where’s the fun in that? Instead, the billionaire playboy passes time by stealing famous works of art. When a cunning insurance investigator (Rene Russo) pegs him as the thief, Crown romances her in between finding ways to put the stolen painting back.
John Hammond in ‘Jurassic Park’ (1993)
When you’ve got as much money as eccentric John "Spared No Expense" Hammond (Sir Richard Attenborough), you can make just about anything you want happen: Including bringing dinosaurs back from extinction. You’d think with all that cash, Hammond could have afforded to hire someone less shady than Dennis Nedry.
Jamal Malik in Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
The million-dollar man at the heart of this Best Picture winner earned his money the old fashioned way -- he won it on a game show. Correctly answering question after question on India’s version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,’ the plucky Jamal (Dev Patel) shows us the true wealth of a man comes from the life he’s lived, not the money he has.
Montgomery Brewster in ‘Brewster’s Millions’ (1985)
Comedy legend Richard Pryor starred as Montgomery Brewster, a down-on-his-luck minor league ball player set to inherit $300 million from his late uncle. There’s only one catch: He’s got to spend $30 million in 30 days before he gets the payday. With the help of his faithful catcher (the great John Candy), Brewster rises to the challenge, learning that true friendship is priceless along the way.
Bruce Wayne in the ‘Batman’ Films (2005-2012)
Fighting crime in Gotham City can be an expensive business, which is why it’s no surprise that a millionaire is the man behind the mask. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) definitely has the brains, brawn and bankbook needed to be The Caped Crusader. After all, someone has to pay for all those wonderful toys.
Howard Hughes in ‘The Aviator’ (2004)
Leonardo DiCaprio earned an Academy Awardnomination for playing the mysterious Hughes in this critically-acclaimed biopic from Martin Scorsese. The film focuses on the millionaire’s early years, telling the story of how the young Hughes danced the line between majesty and madness on his way to becoming one of the richest men in the world.
Charles Foster Kane in 'Citizen Kane' (1941)
One of the most memorable movie millionaires ever, newspaper man Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles) was based on real-life publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst.
Tony Stark in the ‘Iron Man’ Films (2008 -2013)
Sure, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) has a hot girlfriend, a killer house and tons of dough in the bank, but that’s not what makes him one of our favorite movie millionaires. He’s Iron Man, for cryin’ out loud! Need we say more?
