Long before his Jack Sparrow days, Johnny Depp has been known to don some very colorful and unusual costumes. With his latest, ‘Mortdecai,’ Depp rocks one of the finest mustaches in the history of ever. Let’s check a few more of the actor's most memorable looks.
Cry-Baby (1990)
In John Waters’ cult musical. Depp plays stereotypical '50s greaser and bad boy Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker, complete with slicked-back hair, leather jacket and a serious set of pipes.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Tim Burton’s classic film helped Depp break out of his then-“pretty boy” mold, giving the actor one of his best and most iconic performances. His Edward was Pinocchio by way of Michael Jackson, all put through Burton’s unique lens that’s equal parts creepy and sympathetic.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
For this film, Depp spent a great deal of time with writer Hunter S. Thompson in order to channel the iconic gonzo journalist/drug enthusiast's distinctive appearance and mannerisms. The homework paid off, with Depp delivering another unique performance.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Depp took on the protagonist of Washington Irving's famous short story in this Tim Burton-ized re-imagining. His Ichabod Crane as a nebbish, nervous, morose man of science -- decades ahead of his time. You can almost classify the look at “CSI: Victorian.”
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow was far from your stereotypical pirate. The spastic, foppish character was modeled closely after Rolling Stones member, Keith Richards.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka is a tough act to follow, so Depp went in a very different direction when he played the character in this Tim Burton remake. His Wonka, with his childlike mannerisms and fondness for leather, was far more creepy and bizarre that Wilder’s take.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Depp reprised his role as Captain Jack in this epic sequel. In one of the film's more memorable scenes, we saw the madcap pirate decked out in full “Cannibal King” motif.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
If Edward Scissorhands had an older, meaner brother, he might look like Sweeney Todd. Depp is compelling in this macabre musical, playing the somber, white-streaked barber on a quest for vengeance.
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
“Colorful” and “kooky” best describe Depp’s take on The Mad Hatter, another one of the actor’s memorable roles brought to life under Tim Burton’s direction. It’s hard to stand out among Wonderland’s denizens, but Depp’s choices here make it seem effortless.
Rango (2011)
As a CG-animated chameleon, Deep channeled his Hunter S. Thompson person to great effect in this animated film – giving considerable life to this unlikely Western hero sporting a Hawaiian shirt.
Dark Shadows (2012)
Depp went into full-vampire mode for this remake of the classic soap opera series – another collaboration with director Tim Burton. His Barnabas Collins is more Count Orlok than Count Dracula - creepy, inhuman, and (naturally) albino white.
The Lone Ranger (2013)
Between his distinctive face paint and imposing physicality, Depp’s Tanto manages to overshadow co-star Armie Hammer for much of this big-budget misfire.
