'Kingsman: The Secret Service' stars Colin Firth as an impeccably dressed London tailor – and, naturally, he’s also a superspy. From bespoke suits to body armor, here are some standouts in espionage gear.
Goldfinger (1964)
Sean Connery’s James Bond set the standard for the well-dressed spy in his classic gray three-piece, no doubt tailored by the finest shop on Savile Row. Note the waistcoat’s bottom button, properly left undone as per tradition.
Goldfinger (1964)
Bond’s more notorious ‘Goldfinger’ outfit is this terrycloth… romper? Playsuit? We’re not sure what to call it, but Sean Connery’s the only man who could get away with wearing it. James Bond creator Ian Fleming, at right, clearly agrees.
From Russia With Love (1963)
With apologies to Odd Job’s killer hat, our favorite fashion statement in the early Bond films is the poison-tipped stiletto hidden in one of Rosa Klebb’s (Lotte Lenya) sensible shoes. Klebb’s cohort (Robert Shaw) apparently requires little clothing at all.
Get Smart (2008)
While we’re on the subject of footwear, Maxwell Smart’s (Steve Carell) shoe phone has been the most iconic image of this spy spoof ever since Don Adams, the original Maxwell Smart, barked into it in the 1960s TV series.
Inspector Gadget (1999)
He may not officially be a spy, but we couldn't overlook Matthew Broderick's go-go-gadget gear, with a trench coat and hat – and, of course, a cybernetics-enhanced body – that can virtually do anything.
Salt (2010)
With Angelina Jolie sporting two distinctive looks in the film – blonde hair paired with light gray and tan coats, and raven locks matched with an all-black ensemble – 'Salt' could very well have been called 'Salt and Pepper.'
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Now here’s a look that Colin Firth’s ‘Kingsman’ character could get behind -- if he lived in 1973, that is. Handsome suits, rather conservative for the era, hang perfectly on MI6 agents Benedict Cumberbatch and Gary Oldman.
North by Northwest (1959)
Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint admire each other’s wardrobe in Alfred Hitchcock’s caper – but which one’s the spy? In 2006, 'GQ' named Grant’s ‘Northwest’ suit the best in film history. Saint’s dress speaks for itself.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
“Black Widow’s a superhero!” “Black Widow’s a spy!” Stop – you’re both right. Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) made her big-screen debut in the first ‘Iron Man’ sequel. Her hairstyle would change in later films, but not her flair for catsuits.
Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003)
There’s nothing subtle about the colorful battle suits worn by the young stars of Robert Rodriguez’s family action flick. ‘Spy Kids 3-D’ was a megahit, despite being released years before 2009’s ‘Avatar’ made 3-D movies popular again.
The Tuxedo (2002)
There’s not much subtlety when Jackie Chan’s in the house, either. Chan plays a cab driver who inherits a comatose spy’s multi billion-dollar high tech tuxedo, a suit that gives its wearer indisputably Jackie Chan-like powers.
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)
You thought we'd forget the best-dressed secret agent of all time? No, baby! Mike Myers -- here with an equally groovy Elizabeth Hurley -- wears so many eye-popping outfits in this spoof, we don't know where to start.
