9/11 (SEPTEMBER 8)
Charlie Sheen, Gina Gershon, Luis Guzman, Wood Harris and Olga Fonda are all trapped in an elevator in this dramatic disaster movie based on a stage play. Their location: the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The date: September 11, 2001. Whoopi Goldberg also co-stars as a control room technician trying to help the five escape before the attacked building collapses.
Fans of 'Sweet Home Alabama' will enjoy seeing Reese Witherspoon and Candice Bergen reunited for this romantic comedy about a single mom living with three hot young aspiring filmmakers, played by Nat Wolff, Jon Rudnitsky and Pico Alexander. Rom-com icon Nancy Meyers ('The Holiday') produced the movie, which is the directorial debut of her daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer.
Undoubtedly the most anticipated horror movie of the year. Stephen King's classic novel is finally brought to the big screen with Bill Skarsgård as the iconic clown Pennywise. Directed by Andy Muschietti ('Mama'), the terrifying-looking R-rated adaptation is only based on part of the book, following a group of kids who band together against the child-murdering monster.
Based on Vince Flynn's bestselling Mitch Rapp novels, the potential action franchise starter casts Dylan O'Brien as a young CIA recruit who wants revenge on the terrorists who killed his fiancee. Michael Keaton co-stars as the old-school operative tasked with training him, and Taylor Kitsch is the bad guy at hand, a rogue spy intent on starting World War III.
'Black Swan' director Darren Aronofsky is back with another female-driven psychological thriller, this one inspired by 'Rosemary’s Baby' and led by Jennifer Lawrence. She and Javier Bardem play a couple whose relationship becomes strained after some strangers, including another couple played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris, show up at the door of their country home.
Everyone's had some sort of social media drama, but nothing like what Laura (Alycia Debnam-Carey of 'Fear the Walking Dead') is going through with a disturbed classmate she tries to unfriend on Facebook. The girl, played by Liesi Ahlers, reacts by committing suicide and then haunting Laura and terrorizing her real friends in this horror movie for the digital age.
In the sequel to the hit spy comedy 'Kingsman: The Secret Service,' Eggsy (Taron Egerton), Merlin (Mark Strong) and the surprisingly still-alive Harry (Colin Firth) join forces with American counterparts (Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges), to stylishly and violently take down another evil mastermind, played by Julianne Moore.
Kids love Lego, and the makers of blockbuster animated features 'The Lego Movie' and 'The Lego Batman Movie' continue to cash in with hilariously entertaining results, now working with the toy brand’s 'Ninjago' line. The plot involves a group of young ninja warriors protecting the titular city of Ninjago from an evil warlord who is also their leader's father.
Dame Judi Dench again portrays Queen Victoria, 20 years after her Oscar-nominated performance as the monarch in 'Mrs. Brown' (no, this isn't an official sequel). Set in 1887, the period drama focuses on Victoria's friendship with Abdul Karim, her young Indian servant (played by Ali Fazal of 'Furious 7') and is helmed by 'The Queen' director Stephen Frears.
Tom Cruise puts the runner in gunrunner for a movie based on the true story of Barry Seal, a commercial airline pilot who began working for the CIA and then the Medellin drug cartel in the 1980s. 'American Made' reunites Cruise with 'Edge of Tomorrow' director Doug Liman, but they’re definitely not repeating themselves this time around.
Somewhere between a remake and a sequel lies this movie based on the creepy 1990 thriller of the same name, in which medical students venture somewhere between life and death. Ellen Page and Diego Luna are among the group experimenting with near-death experiences, while Kiefer Sutherland reprises his role from the original, now a med school professor.
"For better or for worse," this psychological thriller sounds like an unofficial remake of the 1991 Julia Roberts classic 'Sleeping with the Enemy.' Annie Ilonzeh stars as the woman hiding from her obsessed and abusive husband (Stephen Bishop), and Taye Diggs is also on board, playing a new neighbor she falls for after running off and changing her identity.
Harrison Ford is home again, home again in another continuation of one of his classics, and original 'Blade Runner' director Ridley Scott is back, too, this time as a producer. Directed by Denis Villeneuve ('Arrival'), the sequel adds Ryan Gosling as a detective in search of Ford's Rick Deckard. If nothing else, we can expect more extraordinary futurist visuals.
Kate Winslet and Idris Elba face the elements together as strangers stranded in the mountains after a plane crash. Fortunately, he's a doctor and can tend to her injuries. Unfortunately for her fiance (Dermot Mulroney), the treacherous experience may lead to romance between the survivors. Hany Abu-Assad, director of Oscar nominee 'Paradise Now,' is at the helm.
Join Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and the rest of the 'Friendship Is Magic' ponies in a new big-screen adventure featuring the regular voice cast plus celebrity guests including Sia. The pastel-colored equestrian toys and cartoons are a phenomenal hit with fans of all ages, so we can expect this musical animated feature to be very popular.
Jackie Chan takes on James Bond (sort of) in this action thriller about a businessman seeking revenge for his daughter's death in a terrorist attack. Former 007 actor Pierce Brosnan plays a British official with a possible connection to the organization involved, while two-time Bond movie director Martin Campbell ('GoldenEye,' 'Casino Royale') is at the helm.
'Groundhog Day' meets the slasher genre in this horror movie from the people behind the 'Paranormal Activity' franchise. It stars Jessica Rothe ('La La Land') as a college student who keeps getting killed by a mysterious man, only to wake up that same morning. She relives the day over and over, with many variations, until she survives and unmasks her would-be murderer.
Chadwick Boseman follows up his Jackie Robinson and James Brown portrayals with the lead role in this Thurgood Marshall biopic. Telling the story of the first African-American justice of the US Supreme Court, the movie is 'House Party' helmer Reginald Hudlin's first theatrical release in 15 years. Kate Hudson, Josh Gad, James Cromwell and Sterling K. Brown co-star.
'Independence Day' co-writer Dean Devlin makes his feature directorial debut with, obviously, a disaster movie. This one is set in a future when all of the world's weather is controlled by satellites, until that system starts attacking Earth. Gerard Butler, Ed Harris and Zazie Beetz are among the star-studded ensemble trying to survive extreme tornados, tsunamis and more.
An elite crew of firefighters, known as the 'Granite Mountain Hotshots,' battle a raging outbreak of flames and destruction in Arizona. Josh Brolin, Taylor Kitsch, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Andie MacDowell and Jeff Bridges star; Joseph Kosinski ('Oblivion') directed.
Art dealer Greg Kinnear, struggling in his marriage to Renee Zellweger, meets a homeless man (Djimon Hounsou) at the shelter where he volunteers. The two men unexpectedly find friendship and comfort in this inspiring drama, based on a popular book by Ron Hall, Denver Moore and Lynn Vincent. Jon Voight also stars.
Based on a popular novel by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, Michael Fassbender stars as famed police detective Harry Hole, charged with investigating the disappearance of a woman. Her pink scarf was found wrapped around the head of a snowman; the mystery becomes increasingly ominous as the investigation continues. Rebecca Ferguson and James D'Arcy also star.
Somehow, Madea survived Halloween last year and now she returns to celebrate the season in a new comic adventure. This time, Madea and her friends head to a haunted campground where, no surprise, they are attacked by scary monsters. Once again, Tyler Perry writes, directs and stars as the eternally-lovable, if maddening, Madea.
What if you could see your life more clearly, and it wasn't what you thought it was? This romantic thriller from 'Monster’s Ball' director Marc Forster takes on the scenario literally. Blake Lively plays a blind woman who suddenly regains her sight, and it turns her world upside down, giving her a new perspective on her husband (Jason Clarke) and their marriage.
The macabre manipulator known as Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) has been dead for years, but dead bodies start popping up, all bearing evidence pointing to Jigsaw as the culprit. The 'Saw' horror-movie series is revived in an all-new, terrifying thriller, directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig ('Undead'). Laura Vandervoort stars.
In this dark suburban comedy, directed by George Clooney, Matt Damon stars as a grieving father who reacts unexpectedly to the death of his wife. Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac also star; it's based on a script by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen written in the 1980s, later revised by Clooney and Grant Heslov.
From Jason Hall ('American Sniper') comes a story about a group of U.S. soldiers who return from battle in Iraq and grapple with the challenges of civilian and family life, even as memories of the war threaten to destroy them. Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Joe Cole and Amy Schumer star.
Mothers are the vital force that hold the holidays together for their families, but what happens when their own bad mothers show up? In this hilarious comedy, Amy (Mila Kunis), Kiki (Kristen Bell) and Carla (Kathryn Hahn) are faced with that nightmare when their respective mothers (Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines, Susan Sarandon) arrive for the Christmas season.
Thor (Chris Hemsworth) must battle the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in the gladiatorial arena, but that's only the start of the third adventure in the Thor series. The real enemy is Hela (Cate Blanchett), who wants to destroy all traces of Thor and the civilization of his people. Tom Hiddleston and Tessa Thompson also star; Taika Waititi ('Hunt for the Wilderpeople') directs.
Competing fathers Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell have set aside their differences for the benefit of their families, but now a visit from their own fathers (Mel Gibson and John Lithgow) threatens to disrupt the holidays. Linda Cardellini and John Cena also star in the raucous comedy.
The new big-screen version of Agatha Christie's delightful murder mystery teases an all-star cast amidst lavish luxury on a stranded train. Kenneth Branagh leads the investigation as famed detective Hercule Poirot; the passengers under suspicion include Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Willem Dafoe, Penélope Cruz, Josh Gad and Judi Dench.
Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) enlist new allies to battle an incredibly powerful enemy. Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) will be showcased, alongside an amazing cast and a surprise appearance or two.
A fresh look at the first Christmas, the animated comedy tells events from the perspective of a small yet brave donkey and his intrepid animal friends. Bo (voiced by Steven Yeun) breaks free from a life of servitude, joining with a sheep named Ruth (Aidy Bryant) and a dove known as Dave (Keegan-Michael Key) as they follow a bright star in the sky.
Auggie (Jacob Tremblay) is a boy with facial differences who must overcome big challenges when he starts attending a mainstream school for the first time. Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson play his parents in an inspiring true story. Stephen Chbosky ('The Perks of Being a Wallflower') directs.
Pixar's newest animated adventure is colorful and exciting, traveling to the Land of the Dead as young Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) teams up with trickster Hector (Gael García Bernal) to learn the real story behind his family's history. The voice cast includes Benjamin Bratt, Cheech Marin and Edward James Olmos.
Gary Oldman stars as Winston Churchill, who becomes Prime Minister as England is enveloped by World War II. Facing the formidable German army, is there any hope for the British people? Can Churchill lead them to victory? Kristin Scott Thomas and Ben Mendelsohn also star in this dramatic true-life tale; Joe Wright ('Atonement') directs.
Jessica Chastain stars in the true story of a woman who overcame the odds to run the most exclusive high-stakes poker game in the world, attracting wealthy businessmen and celebrities alike. When she is targeted by the FBI, she hires a top-tier lawyer (Idris Elba) to help her win the case. Aaron Sorkin ('The Social Network') makes his directorial debut.
Former FBI agent Tommy Lee Jones and former mob lawyer Morgan Freeman are bickering rivals on the golf course, but none of that matters when they find out they've been marked for death. Glenne Headly, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Rene Russo also star; Ron Shelton ('White Men Can't Jump') wrote and directed the action-comedy.
