7 Farrelly Brothers Movies You Should See Before 'Dumb and Dumber To'
When it comes to big screen comedies, the Farrelly Brothers are responsible for some of the genre’s most successful entries. With their new film – and first sequel --- ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ set to hit theaters, here are 7 movies from the filmmakers you have to see before watching their newest.
Dumb & Dumber (1994)
With ‘Dumb & Dumber,’ writers-directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly showed the world exactly how far they were willing to go to make audiences laugh their butts off. Starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, this film established the Farrellys as the undisputed kings of over-the-top comedies, with Carrey further solidifying his then-red hot streak at the box office.
Kingpin (1996)
While not as popular with general audiences as Lloyd and Harry’s first outing, this bowling comedy has its fans – thanks in large part to Bill Murray’s very funny and quotable Ernie McCracken (pictured). Woody Harrelson costars as Roy Munson, a former bowling champ-turned-hook-handed has-been, who recruits an Amish bowler (Randy Quaid) for one last shot at glory. You will never look at bad comb-overs the same way again.
There's Something About Mary (1998)
Hair gel jokes aside, with ‘Something About Mary’ the brothers turned a battle for the perfect woman into the ultimate gross-out comedy blockbuster. The film dominated the box office and put star Ben Stiller on track to the Hollywood A-list.
Me, Myself & Irene (2000)
Jim Carrey returned for a second go-around with the Farrellys, this time playing a schizophrenic Rhode Island state trooper assigned to transport a female fugitive (Renee Zellweger) to upstate NY. While their follow-up to ‘Mary’ wasn’t as big at the box office as that film, ‘Irene’ does have its fair share of laugh-out-loud, R-rated gags.
Shallow Hal (2001)
Starring Jack Black, ‘Shallow Hal’ teaches everyone that you should never judge a book by its cover, even if that cover is a 300-pound Gwyneth Paltrow.
Stuck on You (2003)
Playing conjoined twins in pursuit of individual dreams, Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear are forced to share more than just a liver in this comedy. While it under performed at the box office, ‘Stuck on You’ has its moments worth checking out – especially for Damon fans.
Hall Pass (2011)
With their Golden Age behind them, the filmmakers tried to rebound with this two-hander starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis. The funny men play a pair of undersexed husbands whose wives grant them a one week ‘hall pass’ so that they can go off and sow their wild oats. While neither a box office nor critical smash, the performances from the two leads more than make up for the script’s shortcomings. Definitely worth a watch.
