Though the heads at Marvel have made it clear that they’d like their new franchises (meaning Thor and Captain America) to continue in the years to come by adding on more sequels, it seems (at least in the case of Thor) that whether that happens depends a lot on you, the moviegoer.

Marvel’s Thor will officially kick off the 2011 Summer Movie Season later this week, though it’ll have some tough, unexpected competition in Fast Five, which broke records this past weekend with a ridiculous $83 million haul. Does the Marvel movie newcomer have enough summer blockbuster steam to beat that familiar fast and furious bunch? I’ll let you in on my opinion later this week, but for now we’ll let you in on what they’re currently saying about Thor sequels.
Marvel chief Kevin Feige let it be known over the weekend at the Thor press junket that (via Movieline), while they’ve started exploring possible storylines for a Thor 2, whether or not that sequel actually happens depends mainly on you. He notes, “Listen… we’ve got 600+ issues, we’ve got a thousand years of mythology — we have other stories we’d like to tell. The audience will tell us whether they’d like to see those other stories, but we have to be prepared for that, if we should get the call.”
He added, “Don Payne is working on story ideas for a Part Two. We’ve got various options with Ken [Branagh] to discuss coming back, but right now the focus is on the first one. Don is, slowly but surely, thinking about where to take the character next should we be so lucky.”
