The Avengers faced its toughest round of competition this week as the Transformers-esque Battleship stormed its way into theaters alongside two comedies, The Dictator and What to Expect When You’re Expecting. And, as expected (?), The Avengers beat all three of these films to remain at the top of the box office, scoring $55 million to Battleship’s $25.4 million. Meanwhile, The Dictator ($17.4 million) and What to Expect ($10.5 million) finished third and fifth, respectively.
Not a great start for Battleship, but keep in mind the film has already grossed $200 million worldwide, adding to the film’s total and technically making it a worldwide success. Sacha Baron Cohen’s return to the big screen wasn’t as successful either, perhaps signaling a new direction for his comedic shtick.
If you look to the critics, they liked The Dictator, giving it a 61% Fresh rating over at Rotten Tomatoes, which was the weekend’s highest rating for new releases. Battleship finished next with 36% Rotten, with What to Expect When You’re Expecting tanking out at 23% Rotten.
But do the critics and box office accurately reflect the way you felt about each of these films? Now it’s your turn to be the critic and sound off with your thoughts on this weekend’s new releases. Vote now!
