High fives all around since we all accurately predicted that Rango would win the weekend box office, and it did! With $38 million, the Johnny Depp animated western about a chameleon who bumbles his way into becoming the leader of a small town in trouble easily won the weekend, and it didn’t even need 3D to do it. Following not-so-closely behind Rango was The Adjustment Bureau with $20.9 million, Beastly with $10 million, Hall Pass with $9 million and Gnomeo & Juliet with $6 million. The weekend’s other new release, Take Me Home Tonight, unfortunately finished in 11th place with only $3.5 million, perhaps proving that moviegoers are kinda sick of 80s throwback comedies.

If you read our blog each week, you should already know what I’m building to here. Yup, we want to know whether Rango deserved to win the box office, or if one of the other new releases actually turned out better. One critique we’ve been hearing regarding Rango was that it wasn’t really designed for kids, and that its adult themes may have scared off some of the little ones who thought it was much more kid oriented.
Nevertheless, the film is currently riding an excellent 88% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, which is actually higher than the 78% from moviegoers. So chime in below and let us know the real deal. Was Rango really the best choice this weekend, or do you think another film deserved the top spot at the box office? Sound off below …
