'Despicable Me'Okay, so maybe I gave The Twilight Saga: Eclipse a little too much credit in predicting that it’d remain on top for one more week at the box office. But what the Twilight films have now learned is that competition in the summertime is a lot tougher than in early November. This past weekend Eclipse took a pretty hard tumble into second place at the box office with a respectable-but-not-great $33 million. Granted, the franchise has made well over $200 million worldwide, so we can't really say anything bad about its runner-up status.

Instead, Despicable Me (starring the voice of Steve Carell as a supervillain who adopts three little girls) proved that there's certainly room for original animated tales, as it finished in first place with $60 million. A damn fine finish if you ask me, especially for a film that didn't already come with a built-in fanbase, a la Toy Story and Shrek. It's also a good start for Universal, who are just now beginning to dabble in animation, and really needed a big hit this summer.

Naturally, here's where I ask you if that number one finish was deserved. Did you see Despicable Me? Did you dig it? Was it better or worse than Toy Story 3 and Shrek 4? Sound off in our poll below, then feel free to expand upon your answer in the comments below.
