20th Century Fox already has Matthew Vaughn producing its Fantastic Four reboot -- not to mention he just directed the excellent Kingsman: The Secret Service -- and now looking to invest in the prolific action director by tapping Vaughn to direct a new version of Flash Gordon, the comic strip that not only resulted in a cult classic '80s movie, but was also one of George Lucas' creative inspirations for Star Wars.

If you haven't read the comic (and that's understandable; it did start in 1934), it's about a space-faring hero who tries to help liberate a planet from its terrible leader, Ming the Merciless.

Right now the project is in the early stages, so don't expect news of who will be playing Flash Gordon any time soon, but we do know that J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay wrote the script.

And we also know that it's going to take a while for us to now get Queen's Flash Gordon '80s soundtrack out of our heads.
