Big Movie Rumor Alert: Angelina Jolie might be crossing over into the superhero-movie genre, as new rumors are pegging her to direct the upcoming Captain Marvel for Marvel Studios and Disney, due out in 2018.
The rumor comes from the February issue of OK! magazine, which claims that studio folks are so impressed with Jolie's Unbroken that they've offered her a staggering $20 million to direct what will essentially be Marvel's first female-led superhero movie. It's thought that Marvel wants a female lead and director for Captain Marvel, like DC is doing for its solo Wonder Woman film being directed by Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones).
Jolie is an interesting choice, having proven she can do large-scale action with Unbroken. She also knows a thing or two about starring in her own action movies, thanks to the successful Tomb Raider franchise and films like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Wanted. If she climbs aboard Captain Marvel, she'll be in charge of a story about a woman who gains superpowers after coming into contact with alien technology. Considering Captain Marvel (aka Ms. Marvel) is also a member of the Avengers in the comics, we also expect the Marvel heroine to play an integral role in the two-part Avengers: Infinity War coming in 2018 and 2019.
As for who will play Captain Marvel, we don't yet know. But if Jolie directs, then expect a lesser known actress to play the lead. Knowing Marvel and its recent casting choices, it'll be targeting actresses who are charming and charismatic, and can kick a little butt when needed. Do any names jump out at you? And also, what do you think of Angelina Jolie directing a superhero movie?
