Miley Cyrus (and her alter-ego Hannah Montana) proved she still has enough special sauce to open a film in the number one spot, even though she’s still relatively new to this whole movie star thing. Even more impressive was her ability to slow down the surprising Fast & Furious, which took in over $70 million the week before. So kudos to you, Ms. Miley!
This week, however, she has some real competition from another Disney kid. Yup, Zac Efron returns to theaters with a film that doesn’t have High School Musical in its title. Let’s take a look at what we’re in store for, shall we?
17 Again
What’s the Scoop: Former "Friends" star Matthew Perry accidentally transforms back into his 17-year-old self, and winds up looking exactly like Zac Efron. He then attempts to navigate the unfriendly waters of teenage life, while maintaining the smarts of someone much older.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It’s cute, it’s got a familiar premise and it stars that heartthrob Zac Efron. What more does one film need?
Crank: High Voltage
What’s the Scoop: Jason Statham returns in this sequel about a guy whose heart was stolen and replaced with a mechanical one that needs jolts of electricity to keep pumping. Cue lots of action, nudity and down-and-out ridiculousness.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Sexy action, Jason Statham’s six-pack and Amy Smart’s … um, good looks.
State of Play
What’s the Scoop: Russell Crowe plays a reporter whose street smarts help him untangle a murder mystery involving the assistant/mistress of an up-and-coming U.S. Congressman, played by Ben Affleck.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It’s a serious adult thriller with a fantastic cast that’s just itching for more exposure. But does it have enough guts to take out Efron and Statham? That’s where your opinion comes in handy.
Taking into consideration the fact that Hanna Montana and Fast & Furious are still in theaters, which film do you think will win the weekend? Sound off below…
