Want to know what’s coming soon to digital and what to watch right now on FandangoNOW? Here is your weekly guide to the latest releases:
What are the latest new releases to watch right now?
The family comedy Think Like a Dog, in which a boy genius (Child’s Play’s Gabriel Bateman) becomes telepathically linked to his pet, is now available to rent or buy digitally. The movie co-stars Josh Duhamel and Megan Fox as the kid’s parents, who are heading for divorce if he and his dog can’t change their mind.
For adults only, You Don’t Nomi is a film that revisits and reconsiders the 1995 flop Showgirls, which has become a cult classic in the 25 years since its original release. The documentary, which is now available to rent or buy, features interviews with critics arguing for the merits of the erotic drama.
New for purchase only is the timely drama Burden. Based on a true story, the movie stars Garrett Hedlund as a Ku Klux Klan leader who quits the group after meeting an inspiring African-American minister (Forest Whitaker) and falling in love with a single mother (Andrea Riseborough).
What movies are great to pair with those new releases?
If you’re looking for more family films about children and their dogs, check out the classics Lassie Come Home and Old Yeller (the latter will also require the pairing of a box of tissues). And don’t forget that the beloved talking dog Scooby-Doo has a new movie available to rent, the animated feature Scoob!.
Obviously, you’ll want to pair You Don’t Nomi with the NC-17-rated movie it’s dissecting: Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls, which stars Elizabeth Berkeley as a dancer attempting to rise to stardom in Las Vegas. And while you’re watching movies paying tribute to cult classics, I also recommend Tim Burton’s biopic Ed Wood.
Are there any other big movies coming out this week?
Judd Apatow’s latest directorial effort, The King of Staten Island, is one of his best yet, and it releases this Friday, June 12th, as a Home Premiere digital rental. The comedic drama stars Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson, whose own life story inspired the plot about a young man still dealing the the death of his firefighter father almost 20 years earlier.
Also out this Friday are the indie thriller Infamous, which stars Bella Thorne and Jake Manley as a young couple on the run and live-streaming their crime spree on social media, and the critically acclaimed horror movie The Soul Collector (formerly known as 8), which is about an old man forced to collect souls.
What movies are newly available as rentals?
The must-see satirical action thriller The Hunt is now available to rent. The movie stars Betty Gilpin in a star-making performance as a woman hunted by a group of sadistic wealthy elites. Also new to rent is Eliza Hittman’s award-winning drama Never Rarely Sometimes Always, about an unplanned teenage pregnancy.
What are some great movies to watch about the Black experience?
Right now, there are a number of movies made by Black filmmakers and/or about the Black experience that are available for free on FandangoNOW, including the biographical dramas Selma, Ali, Brian Banks, Antwone Fisher and Just Mercy plus The Secret Life of Bees, The Hate U Give and Home of the Brave.
Fandango is also spotlighting Black cinema essentials, a list that includes Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood, blaxploitation films Shaft and Super Fly, superhero movies Black Panther and Blade, comedies House Party and Coming to America and plenty of titles starring Sidney Poitier, including In the Heat of the Night and A Raisin in the Sun.
Additionally, from the list, I highly recommend renting last year’s Queen & Slim plus City of God, Menace II Society, the lesser-known classics Daughters of the Dust, Watermelon Man and Carmen Jones and the recent documentaries I Am Not Your Negro and Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.
Can you recommend some great binge bundles to rent?
While we’re celebrating Black cinema, there’s a four-movie bundle showcasing the talents of 1970s film icon Rudy Ray Moore, who is best-known for his cinematic alter-ego, Dolemite. Rent his debut, Dolemite, and its first sequel, The Human Tornado, plus Petey Wheatstraw and Disco Godfather all together for under $9.
Are we celebrating any big anniversaries this week?
Robert Altman’s ensemble film masterpiece Nashville turns 45 years old this week while the Clint Eastwood western Bronco Billy turns 40, and Another 48 Hrs., a buddy comedy sequel reuniting Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, celebrates its 30th anniversary. Plus the Michael Crichton adaptation Congo turns 25.
More recent favorites celebrating notable anniversaries this week include two action movies starring Angelina Jolie: Gone in 60 Seconds, which turns 20, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which turns 15. And a pair of remakes of ‘80s properties, The A-Team and The Karate Kid, are both celebrating 10 years since release.
