Opening in limited release this week is Lone Survivor, the fourth and final movie of 2013 for Mark Wahlberg (the others being Pain and Gain, Broken City and 2 Guns). It's also the most prestigious part of the bunch for this two-time Oscar nominee. It's hard to tell just yet if this could garner him a third, but it does have us contemplating Wahlberg's career and wondering what his greatest performances are so far.

Who could have guessed 20 years ago that the hip-hop recording artist known then as Marky Mark would be the movie star he is today? It only took a few years for him to play the role many still consider his best: "Dirk Diggler" in Boogie Nights. Surprisingly, he didn't receive his first Academy Award nomination back then, and afterward it took him a while to find the right part to finally achieve the honor.

First he rose as a leading man, starring in blockbusters like the 2001 Planet of the Apes remake and the 2002 Charade remake, The Truth About Charlie. And even after his first Best Supporting Actor nod with Martin Scorsese's The Departed, he continued with action-oriented fluff such as Shooter, Max Payne and The Other Guys, where he at least got to show off some comedic chops opposite Will Ferrell. He's been funny in other movies, too, most notably last year's Ted.

His second Oscar nomination was actually for producing The Fighter, in which he also acted. That was his third collaboration with director David O. Russell (American Hustle) following Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees, the latter of which features another favorite performance, apparently.
