Fellow Canadians Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were the talk of the town when Nick Cassavetes’s The Notebook hit theaters 10 years ago this week. Their on-screen chemistry shone through in the romantic tearjerker about a wealthy Southern belle who carries on a forbidden affair with a plain-spoken laborer.
Despite a topsy-turvy production (the film's star lovebirds didn't get along while making the movie, though they later dated once it was complete), McAdams was Cassavetes’ strong pick for the part. “When Rachel McAdams came in and read, it was apparent that she was the one. She and Ryan had great chemistry between them,” he said. She beat out nine other actresses for the role and was given the script just one day in advance.
One of the scenes McAdams recited for her audition includes this emotional argument her Allie has with Gosling’s Noah before speeding off in her car. The male voice you hear offscreen is Gosling. The passion was already evident before the cameras officially started rolling.
