The Today Show - Daniel Crarig

In the midst of his publicity rounds for SPECTRE, actor Daniel Craig was asked if he'd be making another James Bond movie, and his response -- that he'd rather "break this glass and slash my wrists" -- prompted many to conclude that he was quitting the franchise. During an appearance on The Today Show on Thursday, however, Craig was happy to place his comments in context.

"If you're 200 yards from the end of a marathon and someone comes running up to you and says, 'Are you gonna run another marathon?' there's two words you use," he explained. "And not on a morning show!"

Putting things further into perspective, SPECTRE marks Craig's fourth appearance as James Bond. So that means he's also survived four very lengthy press tours, where he's been deluged with thousands of questions, many of them the same ones over and over again; after all, all of us want to know if the actor playing James Bond will continue in the role.

By the time the press tour rolls around, the actor playing Bond has already been immersed in the movie for many months. In Craig's case, he served as a coproducer, the first time he's done that for a Bond installment. That means he was involved much earlier in the preproduction process, so it's probably been two years or more that he's been working overtime on the project.

Talking with Matt Lauer, Craig wanted to clarify his feelings about his role and the movie. "I've had a massive amount of fun, probably more than I've had in all the others put together," he said. "The simple answer at the moment is: I don't want to think about it. I want to think about other things. I want to go home."

That's completely understandable. Despite his exhaustion, though, and readiness to do other things for a while, he held out hope for the future: "I've had a wonderful, wonderful time making these movies, and maybe I'll make another one. I don't know."

While we wait to see if Craig will return, SPECTRE opens in theaters across the country today.
