With the unrelenting trend of reaching back into the childhoods of Generation Xers and adapting toys, games and other fond memories into big-budget motion pictures, it comes as little surprise that Warner Bros. has greenlit a movie based on the Lego toys.
The idea has been kicking around since 2008 with the story being a family-friendly CGI live action adventure. The project currently has Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs writer-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on board. Robot Chicken's Chris McKay has also signed on to co-direct. Australian company Animal Logic, which worked on the two Happy Feet movies, will handle the animation. It should hit theaters in 2014.
Plot details are scant, but in this interview with Lord and Miller last year, the writers talked about making a “super large-scale brick film,” starring mini-figs interacting in a completely all-Lego environment. They came up with a 40-page treatment that won over Lego execs, known for being fiercely protective of the property.
Other fond childhood memories set to get the movie makeover include He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Monopoly, Battleship, Hot Wheels, Max Steel, Stretch Armstrong, Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? and Where's Waldo?
