The makers of two anticipated movies – each reaching toward different audiences – pulled back the curtains on new footage today. Let’s check out what we’ve been shown:

An American remake of the crowd-pleasing French-Canadian comedy Starbuck, Delivery Man casts Vince Vaughn as a down-on-his-luck deadbeat who learns that a sperm bank mix-up leads to him being the father of 533 kids. Five hundred thirty-three! Instead of running from the truth, though, Vaughn’s character tries to get to know his “children,” with surprisingly endearing results. Starbuck writer-director Ken Scott stays on board for the U.S. remake, and Vaughn’s actually the perfect actor to fill the shoes of the movie’s lead shlub. Disney has programmed this in for Thanksgiving weekend (November 22). Expect it to make boat loads of family-powered cash.

We have been tracking Elysium ever since last year’s Comic-Con, when director Neill Blomkamp unveiled the concept and footage to his follow-up to the mesmerizing District 9. Basically, we’re ready to follow whatever it is this imaginative storyteller decides to try, and Elysium has our pulse racing as it heads to theaters on August 9.

The third trailer, posted above, gives us a better look at the mission conducted by Matt Damon’s hero – a man stricken by illness who must reach the space shuttle Elysium in hopes of finding a cure.

District 9 was a mind-blowing piece of original science fiction. Elysium looks like it could elevate Blomkamp as one of the great genre storytellers. We’ll find out soon enough.
