I bet you thought you were done with our friends from the Toy Story franchise following the release of Toy Story 3 this weekend, right? Well, think again. According to an interview with Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich over at MSN, Pixar will be bringing back some Toy Story characters for a short film that will screen in front of Cars 2 next summer. Here’s what he had to say …
“Well, I really tried my best to end the story of Andy and his toys and bring that story to a close in a really nice way at the end of this film. That being said, we know that people love the characters, love Woody and Buzz, and would hate to say good-bye to them completely. I don't know that there would ever be a [Toy Story 4]. We don't have any plans for one -- but we are trying to find ways to keep the characters alive. We have announced we're going to do a short film in front of Cars 2 that uses the Toy Story characters. We're going to keep them alive; they're not going away forever."
Seeing as Toy Story 3 is probably going to put a giant dent in the summer box office, I don’t blame Pixar for keeping those toys in their back pocket and using them in other stories. Makes you wish they did that for some of the other classic Pixar characters like Nemo or Wall-E. That being said, seeing as Pixar just opened a new studio in Canada that will specifically cater to producing a number of short films each year, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw more friends from the Pixar family returning in some capacity real soon.
