Need a quick recap of the past week in movie news? Here are the highlights:
Florence Pugh heads to Dune: How could Denis Villeneuve top the first installment of Dune? By casting Oscar-nominated actress Florence Pugh, perhaps. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Black Widow actress is in talks to join the cast of Dune: Part Two, which would reunite her with her Little Women co-star Timothée Chalamet. She would play Princess Irulan, daughter of the Emperor, in the sequel to the Best Picture-nominated space epic.
Another Legend: It’s been 15 years since the release of I Am Legend, the apocalyptic action-horror movie starring Will Smith. Now the Oscar-nominated star is set to return for a sequel. Deadline reports that Smith will be joined by Black Panther and A Journal for Jordan actor Michael B. Jordan. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is also back for the follow-up, which will likely again deal with a threat of vampiric monsters caused by a plague.
Kenneth Branagh continues with Agatha Christie: Enough about second installments, how about some news about a part three? In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Studios head Steve Asbell revealed that a third Agatha Christie adaptation from Kenneth Branagh is in the works. This one will be based on a lesser-known Christie mystery than Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Branagh will return to direct and to reprise his role as detective Hercule Poirot.
Christopher Abbott is a Marvel villain: Yet another one of Spider-Man’s foes has been cast for the Kraven the Hunter movie. Deadline reports that Christopher Abbott (Possessor) will portray the Marvel villain known as The Foreigner, and this character will be Kraven’s primary adversary in the Sony Pictures release. Deadline also recently reported the casting of Alessandro Nivola (The Many Saints of Newark) in an unnamed villain role as well.
Blue Beetle casts Harvey Guillén: Speaking of comic book movies, Warner Bros. and DC’s Blue Beetle has added a rising star to its cast. According to Deadline, What We Do in the Shadows breakout Harvey Guillén is joining lead actor Xolo Maridueña in the superhero blockbuster, but his role has not been revealed. The adaptation will be helmed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) and is set for release on August 18, 2023.
