How do you maintain your status as the biggest movie fan in the world (in your mind) once you have a baby? Early on, their fussiness can interrupt even the shortest of films at any moment, ruining a simple Friday night rental. And when they grow out of that, they need to be entertained. But not with all your favorite movies. Not yet. So, maybe you have to see fewer movies for a while.
That doesn't mean you have to abandon your love for the movies, though, not even for a second. Take a tip from the Mackies, a couple from New Zealand who had a child as they also moved to another country (Australia). They couldn't easily go out and meet new people, not without paying a fortune in babysitting costs. Meanwhile, they wanted something through which to keep in touch with family and old pals back home.
Here's what they did (and continue to do): every weekend, mom and dad and baby (plus a couple of teddy bears) have been re-creating scenes from the couple's favorite movies. They have a lot of favorites, actually, because they've been doing this for a long time and have gotten to just about every movie you could think of that people who grew up in the '80s and '90s would love. They call it Cardboard Box Office, because their sets are made cheaply.
Beginning with The Life Aquatic in the fall of 2013 (yes, they were doing it before the new parent characters in Neighbors), they've done the Back to the Future movies, the Star Wars movies, Home Alone, E.T., The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, Jaws, A Christmas Story, Goldfinger, Wayne's World, The Shining -- everything on a certain level of pop-culture familiarity (there aren't too many foreign films or Golden Age classics). Plus a few TV shows, including Game of Thrones.
Also, as you can see above, they've gone as recent as Jurassic World, high heels and all.
Watch their video below and of course visit their increasingly popular Flickr Photostream. And I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you were inspired to do your own scenes with your own kids.
