The Next '21 Jump Street' Sequel May Share a Universe with the 'Men in Black'

It's no secret that one of the bigger emerging trends in Hollywood right now is the shared movie universe, a la what Marvel Studios is doing (see: Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theaters this weekend) and what Warner Bros. will do with their own DC movies, beginning with next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

But what we aren't seeing from these shared movie universes is an expansion outside the comic book genre. Universal is mounting a shared universe of monster movies and there's been talk of a Robin Hood-themed franchise in the works, but the comedy genre hasn't really been mined for potential... until now.

Yes, that 21 Jump Street/Men in Black crossover movie you heard rumblings about is indeed real, and as we speak Sony is drafting up a script with assistance from the Jump Street team of Phil Lord, Chris Miller and producer Neil Moritz.

So what's the concept?

According to The Wrap, "“21 Jump Street” took aim at reboots, while “22 Jump Street” targeted sequels, so it makes sense that the next “Jump Street” movie will send-up the current trend of Shared Movie Universes by having Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum enter the “Men in Black” universe and investigate aliens."

You know what... that's actually a pretty good idea! And it makes logical sense that the next sequel would take a more comedic look at the complexities of a shared movie universe -- and with Lord and Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) involved in the development of it, we trust that this weird idea will entertain in a number of unexpected ways.

No word yet on which Men in Black stars will join the film, though Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are both expected to reprise their Jump Street roles.

Additionally, the Wrap also confirms a female 21 Jump Street spinoff is in the works from the Broad City writers -- a movie that may utilize the undercover female duo from 22 Jump Street, played by rapper Rye Rye and Dakota Johnson (pictured above).
