Although we’re still two weeks away from the release of Real Steel, The Playlist reports that director Shawn Levy has confirmed that a sequel is currently in the works. Executive producer Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks apparently believe the robot boxing flick will generate enough buzz (and by buzz we mean money) to warrant a second movie.
Levy confirmed that he is signed to direct the sequel and that the principal cast of Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly and Dakota Goyo will all return. "I will produce and direct again. Hugh’s definitely in and certainly, I can’t give away too much, but Dakota, Evangeline and Hugh are all a big part of the sequel. It is the same characters, the next chapter."
The second Steel will reportedly pick up where the first movie ends and deal with the aftermath of the Zeus-Atom fight. Levy says the sequel will delve into the class warfare between the underground unsanctioned world of robot boxing and the corporate funded Robot Boxing League.
Jackman’s schedule is the one thing that will push this sequel into 2013, 2014 range. The actor is currently filming Les Miserables and will most likely move straight into shooting The Wolverine afterwards which will then be followed by a brief return to Broadway.
We’ll have to wait and see when Dreamworks officially green lights the movie, but with Spielberg, Levy and Jackman all on board and assuming the movie doesn’t absolutely bomb during opening weekend, it’s pretty much a done deal. Real Steel will open October 7.
