The pair of Scooby-Doo live-action movies are actually pretty funny, clever and creative movies for kids (which shouldn't be a surprise considering they were written by Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn), but they were a bit expensive to make and not huge blockbusters. So after the superior Monsters Unleashed hit theaters in 2004, all future Scooby movies went back to the land of small-screen animation.

But now - well, technically on September 21, 2018 - Scooby-Doo is heading back to the big screen

Warner Bros. is still planning to keep the movies animated this time, and they're turning to their regular animation team to be the creative force behind it. That's a good thing because while the Scooby-Doo movies since Monsters Unleashed have all been straight to video, they're actually pretty good.

Word also has it that Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera don't plan on stopping at just Scooby-Doo, either. Variety reporter Justin Kroll shared that he's been hearing Warner Bros. wants a fleet of films with characters like Scooby, the Jetsons and the Flintstones. That's no grand shock considering cinematic universes are all the rage these days (oh, hey Marvel!), but it will probably all hinge on how well this first Scooby-Doo does.

If it's a hit, like The Lego Movie was, then expect those other movies to hit the ground running not long after.
