DC and Warner Bros. are busy playing catch-up with Marvel and Disney on the movie front, and the tandem has revealed nine titles in various stages of development and scheduled for release in the coming years. We don’t know what all of those titles will be, but there’s an interesting rumor concerning a project that would potentially be DC’s answer to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to Latino Review, DC and Warner Bros. have made overtures to writers to solicit their takes on a potential film involving Legion of Superheroes. This is not Justice League (which would be the DC equal of the Avengers), but a totally separate team who made their debut back in 1958. The squad has been around for ages, and like most DC properties, has had some major revamps over the years. The potential is certainly there for a feature-film franchise to be built around the core team, though.

Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad might have names that sound like they hopped right off the pages of a comic published during the Eisenhower era, but they actually come from the 31st century. Their most recent appearance in DC’s New 52 found them on 21st century Earth to save their own future. Clearly, the stories for a feature film are there.

The team has also gone up against Darkseid, which would seemingly make it easy to tie them into the rest of DC’s cinematic universe.

Of course, this is all speculation at this point, but the idea of a Legion of Superheroes movie definitely makes sense. The team’s rich history and diverse group of members makes it one of those titles that could help DC narrow the gap with Marvel in the race for comic book movie supremacy. Plus, if Guardians has taught us anything, it’s that even the most obscure comic teams can crossover into the mainstream in the hands of the right director and screenwriters.
