The final installment in the blockbuster Resident Evil franchise opens in theaters everywhere January 27. Before catching Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, refresh your memory with our Resident Evil “CliffsNotes” followed by a teaser of what’s in store for the sixth and Final chapter.
Chapter One: Resident Evil (2002)
The Final Chapter’s trailer promises that the new sequel will end “where it all began.” Where it all began was the Hive, an underground bioengineering facility in Raccoon City where the deadly and mutating T-virus was unleashed, turning its human and animal occupants into terrifying, zombielike creatures. In the first movie, a team of commandos -- Alice (Milla Jovovich), Rain (Michelle Rodriguez), and Matt (Eric Mabius) -- penetrate the Hive to find out what caused the outbreak and to contain it, despite the best efforts of the Hive’s governing computer system, the Red Queen, to keep anyone from entering or exiting:
Although Alice manages to survive the Hive’s zombie employees, killer mutant dogs, “laser hall,” and the Licker (a genetically mutated monster), she cannot stop the T-virus from escaping to the surface, a fact she discovers in the movie’s chilling final sequence:
Chapter Two: Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
A war now rages above ground between the living and the Undead, but to the benefit of all human survivors, Alice has been genetically altered by her exposure to the T-virus and now possesses enhanced strength, speed and agility to kick zombie ass. With her new powers, Alice joins a small band of elite soldiers -- led by popular Resident Evil video game characters Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Oliveira (Oded Fehr) – seeking to escape Raccoon City. Along the way, they face off against a series of terrifying zombie creatures, including Umbrella’s newest bioweapon, Nemesis:
After her fight with Nemesis, Alice attempts to flee Raccoon City in a helicopter with other survivors but it crashes and she’s taken captive by Umbrella. When she wakes up, she discovers she has new telekinetic powers, which she uses to escape. However, we soon see that Alice is now under the control of the Umbrella Corporation’s Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen). “Program Alice” activated!
Chapter Three: Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)
Five years after the Raccoon City disaster, Alice wanders alone across a desolate America, while villains Albert Wesker and Dr. Isaacs seek to locate her using the new White Queen computer. While traveling through the Nevada desert, Alice encounters a convoy of human survivors that includes old friend Carlos Oliveira and new friend -- and popular Resident Evil video game character -- Claire Redfield (Ali Larter). In one of the movie’s most memorable sequences, Alice uses her new telekinetic powers to defend the survivors from an attack by flesh-hungry zombie crows:
In the film’s final act, Alice squares off against Dr. Isaacs, who has mutated into a monster called the Tyrant after being bit by one of the zombies he was experimenting on with Alice’s cloned blood. The two fight in a replica of the Hive, complete with everyone’s favorite Cuisinart-style corridor, “laser hall.” Just when it seems like all is lost for Alice, she’s saved by an unexpected but familiar heroine:
Chapter Four: Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
Resident Evil: Afterlife kicks off with a thrilling sequence in which Alice and her clones invade an underground Umbrella facility in Tokyo, Japan, in order to kill Wesker and defeat the Umbrella Corporation once and for all:
Following the Tokyo attack, Alice is captured by Wesker, who injects her with a serum that takes away her telekinetic powers. A more human Alice escapes and reunites with Claire Redfield and her brother Chris (Wentworth Miller). The gang travels to Arcadia, an abandoned oil tanker broadcasting that it’s an infection-free zone. But it turns out to be a trap, and Alice and the gang must once again take on Wesker:
Chapter Five: Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
Retribution opens with Umbrella forces attacking Arcadia. Blasted overboard during the attack, Alice wakes up in Umbrella Prime, a bioweapons testing facility, where she encounters Ada Wong (Bingbing Li), an Umbrella operative. Wong tells Alice that she and Wesker no longer work for Umbrella because the Red Queen supercomputer has taken over. Alice decides to join forces with Ada and together they set out to escape the facility. But first they must survive a simulation of New York City -- and two deadly Axemen!
Alice and Ada later arrive at a simulation of Raccoon City, where Alice encounters a young girl named Becky who thinks Alice is her mother. Although Becky is only Alice’s clone’s daughter, Alice vows to protect Becky and help her escape from a group of familiar clone soldiers waiting for them outside:
Chapter Six: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017)
At the end of Retribution, Alice is seized by Wesker and injected with a serum that restores her telekinetic powers, making her the ultimate weapon to take on the Red Queen, which is now set on destroying all that remains of humanity. Here’s a sneak peek at the final Chapter of Alice’s saga, which sees her reuniting with Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen), Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) and the mysterious Red Queen (played by Ever Anderson, daughter of Milla Jovovich and director Paul W.S. Anderson), and returning to the place it – and this article -- all began:
