It doesn't look like Warner Bros. wants to waste much time getting that new Superman movie up and off the ground, as the first round of potential directors has arrived online courtesy of Deadline. Now, be warned, this sort of thing has been happening a lot lately, where these lists of people being considered leak online a little too early – leaving us with names that, in all likelihood, will not have anything to do with the film once all is said and done.
That being said, it's exciting to see some movement on Superman, and the first sets of names being tossed around are even more exciting. We're talking Zack Snyder (300), Duncan Jones (Moon), Tony Scott (Man on Fire), Matt Reeves (Let Me In) and Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, Clash of the Titans 2). Not a bad list to start out with, right?
Right off the bat you have to give an advantage to Snyder and Liebesman, since both are currently working with Warner Bros. Snyder is a bit more friendly with the studio, having directed his last few films for them, and Liebesman is about to helm the Clash of the Titans sequel for Warners. That said, both Snyder and Liebesman have other films they're working on right now (like a 300 sequel and Titans sequel), so neither would have time to take on Superman for awhile.
Jones, however, is free now that he's almost done working on the thriller Source Code with Jake Gyllenhaal, and Reeves is free too, having finished Let Me In. Both are hot up-and-comers, too, and could provide an energetic jolt to the franchise, which is part of why Sony opted to have newcomer Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) direct their new Spider-Man movie. Meanwhile, Tony Scott is completely wrong for the project, and probably won't remain on this list for much longer.
Maybe that's what these franchises need – some new blood. Out of this crop of directors, who would you most like to see get the job?
