Finally, we have an exciting weekend on our hands! Yup, it’s Memorial Day Weekend – which means it’s time to dust off the old barbecue, invite a bunch of people over to your house who won’t clean up after themselves and spend your nights watching one of the huge blockbusters arriving in theaters. Let’s take a look at which films are battling it out over the long (three days isn’t that long, but whatever) holiday weekend:
Terminator Salvation
What's the Scoop: The first PG-13 rated Terminator film, this one is set in 2018 right at the beginning of man’s war against the machines. Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) plays John Connor, who helps leads a resistance against the killer robots, while newcomer Sam Worthington stars as a death row inmate from the 90s who wakes up in 2018 with, well, let’s just say a new lease on life.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It's the fourth installment in a very popular franchise (kinda like last year’s Memorial Day flick, Indiana Jones), it has a massive fanbase, one of the hottest actors and just plain looks rocktacular. Nothing says summer movie season like two hours worth of explosions.
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
What's the Scoop: Ben Stiller returns for this sequel about a lowly night watchman at a museum who must deal with the fact that all of the museum’s exhibits come to life at the end of the day. In part two, Stiller heads to the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. to rescue some of his pals after they’re shipped there by mistake – opening him up to a whole new world of weirdness.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Well, you’ve gotta do something with those kids while they’re out of school for so long, and something tells me this might keep them busy for a little while.
Dance Flick
What's the Scoop: The Wayans brothers return to their popular (yet tiring) spoof series with a movie that makes fun of all those dance flicks like Step Up and Save the Last Dance.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Those teens and adults who aren’t in the mood for dark robotic war or light family comedy might just settle in for this knowing it’s bound to carry a few laughs.
Though Angels & Demons and Star Trek are still in theaters, I can’t see either one of them winning this weekend. If I had to made the call, I’d go with Night at the Museum in the three-day (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), only because the family films always do well during holiday weekends. But Terminator is a strong animal that shouldn’t be counted out. Tough pickings…sound off below.
