For several years now we’ve gotten used to the fact that the Academy Awards falls on a Sunday night. It’s given us an opportunity to plan lavish parties, complete with Oscar scorecards and your aunt’s favorite chips and dip recipe. The last time the Oscars were held during the week was back in 1999, when they took place on Monday night – and now, according to Variety, the Academy is thinking about shifting back to Monday in 2013 in order to avoid any conflicts with the NFL.

Oscars

Problems are arising because the Oscar ceremony may be moved up earlier in the year (January/February), and a new collective bargaining agreement within the NFL could add two more additional games to the season, pushing back the Super Bowl and causing all sorts of problems for any event (like the Oscars) that wants to own a Sunday night in the dead of winter.

Academy execs say they’re exploring all their options, and admit that there’s no rule that says they have to happen on Sunday. Plus, a Monday night may guarantee them more viewers since lots of folks typically use Sunday as a day to get chores done and whatnot. On the flip side, a Monday night ceremony may cut down on your ability to throw a kick-ass Oscar party … but one imagines the Academy doesn’t care about that because it just means more people watching it from their own homes instead of in groups at a friend’s house.

What do you think? Does it even matter to you which day the Oscars fall on?
