Sundance Festival Winners: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (above) won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. The film explores a friendship that develops between an awkward high school student and a lonely classmate with leukemia. Other U.S. award winners include documentary The Wolfpack, about two impoverished brothers who make their own movies. The Michael Fassbender-starring Western-style drama Slow West and The Russian Woodpecker, a documentary about the war between Russia and the Ukraine, won World Cinema Grand Jury Prizes. [Sundance]
Deepwater Horizon: Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, above, with Mark Wahlberg) is in "final negotiations" to direct Deepwater Horizon, based on the true story of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. He would replace J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year), who came on board in July 2011 and has now departed due to "creative differences." Mark Wahlberg is set to star as the titular oil rig's supervisor; Liam Neeson and Michael Keaton are touted for other roles in the movie, which is scheduled for release on September 30, 2016.
