Though it doesn't hit video-on-demand until September 24th, and won't be in theaters until October 29th, Gareth Edwards' Monsters has been all the buzz since first premiering back at the SXSW Film Festival in March. Like District 9 in a way, Monsters is a low-budgeted sci-fi film that's set during a time where aliens have crash-landed on earth and have been subsequently cordoned off into one specific area near the Mexican border. The film then follows a journalist who is tasked with retrieving his boss's daughter from the "infected" area and escorting her to safety. Commence awesomeness!

'Monsters'

Now, with buzz building for Edwards' debut film, the guy's next project is beginning to build some high-caliber talent. Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov will produce Edwards' follow-up film (which he's writing and will direct), and it's being described as "an epic human story set in a futuristic world without humanity." Seems strange to have an epic human story in a world without humanity, but that's what's so intriguing. Bekmambetov is a guy who likes to support emerging talent in the sci-fi field (he did the same for Shane Acker by lending his support to the animated film 9), and it looks like Edwards is his next so-called "project".

Are you excited about Monsters? Have you already seen it? And are you diggin' this new low-budgeted sci-fi trend?
