Every mom deserves a night out. Here are some movies in theaters this fall to consider for an evening with the gal pals. Enjoy.
When the Bough Breaks: A couple unable to conceive hires a surrogate who seems sweet but turns psychotic, threatening to ruin their marriage and their lives. If you and your lady friends are fans of Fatal Attraction, this may be just the ticket. In theaters now.
Bridget Jones’s Baby: Oh, Bridget. How we loved you glug-glug-glugging your wine and belting out (well, actually lip-synching) “All By Myself” during the opening credits of the first Bridget Jones. Forever fans may want to gather for this latest venture, which contains a nod to that musical solo and also finds Bridget pregnant and wondering whether the dad is Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth) or that hot new guy (Patrick Dempsey). Opens Sept. 16.
The Dressmaker: High fashion. Redemption. Liam Hemsworth. What more could a girl want for a movie with friends? Kate Winslet, who seems to be looking more and more like Madonna, stars as the local girl who makes good and comes back to town to show what she’s got. Opens Sept. 23.
Queen of Katwe: This movie screams mother-daughter movie night or flick with friends. Either way, this inspirational tale is sure to bring on the tears and the cheers as it follows a Ugandan girl who discovers her destiny when she’s empowered to play chess and win. Opens Sept. 23
The Girl on the Train: Attention book club ladies! If you’ve all read the book, or even if you haven’t, this thriller based on the best seller by Paula Hawkins is sure to keep you on the edge of your seats. Follow it up with a drink and discussion. Opens Oct. 7.
Certain Women: If thoughtful indie movies are your thing, check out this portrait of three strong-willed women (played by Laura Dern, Michelle Williams and Kristen Stewart) set in Montana. Described as a “slow burn” by Variety, it’s an ensemble piece that seems well suited for a quiet night with friends. Opens Oct. 14.
Allied: Last time Brad Pitt played an assassin tasked with killing another assassin, he fell in love with his costar and married her. This time, presumably, will be different. Instead of Angelina Jolie, Pitt plays opposite Marion Cotillard in this fast-paced spy thriller set during World War II. Opens Nov. 23.
