Last week, it was reported that Robert Rodriguez was looking to cast Mel Gibson in a role for Machete Kills, the sequel to the 2010 Mexploitation film starring Danny Trejo. No word yet on what role Gibson will play in the sequel, which finds Trejo's Machete being hired by the U.S. government to head into Mexico to take down a cartel leader and a madman billionaire who plan to launch a weapon into space.
Also no word on if Rodriguez has managed to lure Michelle Williams, whom he also wants for a role, but we do know that Jessica Alba (Sartana) and Michelle Rodriguez (Luz) will reprise their roles.
Machete Kills is scheduled to arrive in theaters sometime in 2013. What character do you think Gibson will play?
Speaking of sequels, it's no secret that this summer's The Amazing-Spider-Man isn't going to be a one-and-done deal for Sony. Director Marc Webb has even publicly said that the origin story behind the evolution of Spidey will unfold over multiple sequels.
Several writers have already begun work on the second and third films and now, Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will take a crack at it. the duo will work on the script for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
"We grew up as huge Spider-Man fans, so, to us, the opportunity to work on this film is akin to being handed the Holy Grail," the writers said in a joint statement. "We love the direction Sony and the filmmakers are taking the Peter Parker/Spider-Man mythology and we couldn't be more excited to be a part of this legendary franchise."
There's certainly still some cynicism from casual movie-goers about rebooting the franchise so soon, but perhaps word of mouth and fanboy (and girl) fervor can propel Spider-Man to success.
Are you planning on watching The Amazing Spider-Man and what are your thoughts on the upcoming sequels being penned by the Transformers guys?
