All of the smiling Santas, cheery elves and blindingly bright lights may try to convince you otherwise, but Christmas is an inherently scary time. The pressure to deliver a perfect holiday seems to get more and more intense every year, to the point where someone could easily reach their breaking point and just snap. But that murderous rage is the stuff of Silent Night, Deadly Night. Krampus looks to be telling a very different kind of Christmas horror story.

Written and directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat), Krampus is about a family that becomes disillusioned with the holiday spirit, and in doing so accidentally summons the punishing shadow of Santa Claus into their lives. Instead of elves who wrap presents, Krampus has minions who help prepare his torment. Instead of dropping presents down a chimney, Krampus lowers a hook to snatch up naughty children.

Basically, Krampus looks like the greatest Christmas movie ever made. Check out the first trailer below.

Krampus hits theaters on December 4, 2015.
