Motherless Brooklyn Gugu Mbatha-Raw Edward Norton

Based on an acclaimed novel by Jonathan Lethem, Motherless Brooklyn follows an unusual detective as he tracks down a killer. Edward Norton stars as the private investigator and also directs. Here's what you need to know before going.

What made the novel special?

Born and raised in Brooklyn, author Jonathan Lethem had already featured a private detective in his first novel, but returned to the character type in Motherless Brooklyn, first published in 1999. The novel's hero, Lionel Essrog, has the often misunderstood Tourette syndrome, which is commonly manifested with multiple motor and vocal tics. Winning various awards, the novel also earned Lethem many big fans, including actor Edward Norton.

Why was the time period changed for the film? What other changes were made?

The novel took place in the 1990s, while the film is set in 1957. Fresh off completing his performance in David Fincher's Fight Club, actor and director Edward Norton said in an interview that he had become aware of "wrongheaded ideas" that affected infractural decisions in New York City in the mid-1950s and yearned to explore the issues creatively. Struck by the "phenomenal character hook" in Motherless Brooklyn, he received ready permission from author Lethem to change the setting to 1957 and began work on a screenplay. He kept the premise, but created a new mystery plot and new supporting characters.

Who stars?

Edward Norton stars as Lionel Essrog; Bruce Willis plays his mentor, Frank Minna. Alec Baldwin portrays a new character, an unsavory real-estate developer named Moses Randolph; Willem Dafoe costars as Moses' brother, Paul Randolph. Gugu Mbatha-Raw also stars as Laura Rose, a community activist.

What's the story?

As written for the screen by Edward Norton, the crime drama follows private detective Lionel Essrog as he seeks to solve the mysterious murder of his beloved mentor, Frank Minna. He crosses paths with a powerful developer and a community activist, who deepen the mystery that envelops Lionel.

Who directed?

Edward Norton. (Funny how that name keeps cropping up!) The actor previously helmed the comedy-drama Keeping the Faith, starring himself as a priest and Ben Stiller as a rabbi who both fall in love with a free-spirited friend (Jenna Elfman). Perhaps needless to say, complications ensue, both religious and otherwise. That film was also set in New York City, though in the modern day.
