It's quickly becoming the next Twilight, and now the upcoming Hunger Games adaptation may have landed one of Hollywood's hottest up-and-coming actresses to play the lead role of Katness: Jennifer Lawrence.

Variety claims the actress is close to getting an offer, and that she's the one everyone wants to play Kastness, the 16-year-old heroine of the book, which follows a future society that stages events where kids fight one another to the death. Gary Ross (Pleasantville) will direct the film, and Lawrence – who not only has a role in X-Men: First Class this year, but also one in the Sundance winner Like Crazy, could use this to immediately boost her star status and instantly award her a very loyal fanbase.

Not sure if we're talking Twilight-style fanbase (it's still too early to tell how big this is really going to get), but based on early buzz around each casting story, the film certainly appears to be gaining a tremendous amount of momentum.

The Hunger Games is due out on March 23rd, 2012. What do you Hunger Games fans think of the Jennifer Lawrence casting?
