When your film grosses $175 million domestically during its opening weekend and raises its two week total to just north of $700 million, chances are you're going to be getting another gig very soon. Such is the case with Shane Black, whose Iron Man 3 shot to the top of the box office this past weekend like Tony Stark on a test flight.
So what's next for Black? Looks like another superhero movie.
Sony has announced that they have signed Black to co-write and direct an adaptation of '30s and '40s pulp hero Doc Savage.
The title character, Clark Savage Jr. was first introduced in 1933 as a physician, scientist, inventor, reseracher and adventurer who possessed great strength, a photographic memory and martial arts skills. Doc Savage made it to the big screen in 1975 with Ron Ely playing the character in Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze.
Black told Hero Complex that he wanted to follow Iron Man 3 with "an adventure picture. I'm more interested in things that obsess me, things that catch my attention and ignite any kind of passion I have. Working is when I'm most comfortable. I have to be working on something I love."
Savage is like Tony Stark in some ways, if Stark had been around in the 1930s. Both possess a wide range of inventions that they've built, many of them becoming reality including hand-held automatic weapons, night vision goggles and even pedestrian things like answering machines and television.
