It all began in 2012 during the Warner Bros. San Diego Comic-Con panel that featured snippets of the first Hobbit movie, Pacific Rim and Man of Steel. In between all that excitement, Legendary Pictures snuck in a brief surprise clip for a Godzilla reboot that sent the crowd into a tizzy.
Almost a year and a half after the project was first announced, the first trailer for Godzilla is here in all its rampaging glory. Granted, the lucky souls who made it into this year's Warner Bros. Hall H panel were able to catch a glimpse of the monster in a promo reel.
Toho, the Japanese production company which released the first and subsequent Godzilla movies has put out a shorter and slightly different international trailer.
Next year marks the 60th anniversary of the first Godzilla movie and director Gareth Edwards pays homage to the original in both look and theme. Edwards' Godzilla is an origin story with a nuclear theme.
"To me, he's like a force of nature, like the wrath of God or vengeance for the way we've behaved," Edwards told USA Today. "I want it to be epic. I want to get the hairs on the back of your neck up."
The human cast includes a group of talented actors including Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a soldier, Elizabeth Olsen as his nurse wife and Bryan Cranston as a scientist. David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe and Juliette Binoche also costar.
If you want to catch this trailer on the big screen, it will be attached to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug beginning this weekend.
