Tuesday was officially "Alien Day," but we can keep on celebrating. In fact, we can keep up the Alien franchise love for days and years to come, because there are more installments on the horizon. One of them, the prequel Alien: Covenant, is definitely on its way, while an as-of-yet-unnamed sequel from writer-director Neill Blomkamp is merely a possibility. A good possibility, according to Sigourney Weaver, but still uncertain.
Still, regardless of the future of Alien 5, which is supposed to be a follow-up to the 1986 installment Aliens while ignoring Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, we'll always have the concept art. Last year we got to see some illustrations of Weaver's Ripley, the resurrected character Hicks (Michael Biehn) and of course some xenomorphs. Now Blomkamp has shared this look at the return of Newt, who will apparently now be grown up:
As for the definite, Ridley Scott-helmed Alien movie in the works, the look is real. As in an actual still photograph from something we'll see on-screen. No characters or creatures or spaceship yet, just a close-up tease confirming that the Covenant of the title refers to the latest Weyland-Yutani colonial space mission we'll be following. The ship is heading across the galaxy to find a paradise planet, but of course since this is a horror/sci-fi property they find disaster instead. See the first look here, via Geek Tyrant:
Yeah, it's just a patch on a suit -- worn by whom, we don't know. Katherine Waterston? Danny McBride? Demian Bichir? Amy Seimetz? Billy Crudup? Those are likely Covenant crew members, going by the notable cast-member list. They join the returning Michael Fassbender, who reprises his role as the android David 10 years following the events of Prometheus. According to the movie's synopsis, he's alone on the planet but surely that's not true. There will be aliens, of course.
Alien: Covenant hits theaters on August 4, 2017.
