“Jem is truly outrageous. Truly, truly outrageous!”

I know. I just totally dated myself. In fact, when I asked my son’s friend to be my model for a Jem Halloween tutorial, she had no idea what I was talking about. What? You never heard of Jem and the Holograms? As if. 

Jem was an animated series (1985 - 1988) based on Jerrica Benton, a record company owner and lead singer of the rock group Jem and the Holograms. The character is full mystery as she is able to adapt the Jem persona with the help of a holographic computer. Her earrings are also able to project holograms around her and protect her from danger. She’s no ordinary pop star. 

The live-action movie based on this fun and mysterious character is coming out October 23 with a cast of stars many of us '80s kids will remember. You can watch Jem the movie trailer here. Since Halloween is just around the corner, this is the perfect time to share a very pink and shimmery tutorial for Jem.  

Step 1. Make sure your child’s face is clean and moisturized. 

Step 2. Jem has a variety of eye makeup styles to choose from. I went with the old-school one and used L’Oreal Paris Le Matte lip pen in fuchsia for both the lips and the eyes. Using a lip pen will make the application much easier and smoother. Plus, you will be able to get a straighter edge whatever design you choose. 

Step 3. Jem is a pop star so you can get very creative and add a dramatic cat eye, glitter, lashes – depending on the age of your child. My model is 14 years old so I went with a simpler cat eye and mascara. 

Step 4. I did a bit of strobing on the cheekbones in gold using L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator.

Step 5. Finding pink star-shaped earrings may not be easy. I used pink gems from Michael’s Art & Crafts and glued them to the ears with eye lash adhesive. 

Step 6. Use the same eye color for lips, and you’re done with makeup!

Step 7. Finding a pink punk-rock wig at your local Halloween store should be pretty easy. To be consistent with the more '80s Jem, we used a pink T-shirt and tied it with a knot.
