Hail Caesar!

Twentieth Century Fox unveiled the first full trailer for Matt Reeves' wildly anticipated Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a follow-up to surprise hit Rise, which helped put the long-standing Apes series back on the map. Well, Andy Serkis and his motion-capture magic are coming back to the big screen in what looks like an escalating battle between mankind and our simian masters. Here’s the trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

This footage was screened in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, with Gary Oldman trying to rally the human troops for a battle against the apes, and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) embarking on a journey into the woods to find Caesar (Serkis), and possibly broker a peace treaty.

The ability to use mo-cap to create an ape army gives this new franchise a serious leg up on the classic Apes movies, where rubber masks and hair suits were supposed to instill fear. Caesar is a spectacular creation (thank you Weta), and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has the potential to be the biggest hit of the summer of 2014.

Fox moved the sequel up to July 11, now that Fast & Furious 7 no longer plans to open then. Here’s a character poster for one of the studio’s dirtiest apes. What do you think about the trailer?
