Last year, Sony Pictures Animation brought the most downloaded game of all time to the screen with the 3D computer-animated Angry Birds. And now, the studio is revving up with a fresh slate of family-friendly fare for 2017 and beyond.
Films to look forward to focus on everything from Smurfs to emojis to Spider-Man. There’s even an animated musical featuring the work of Pulitzer Prize winner Lin-Manuel Miranda. "Each movie really reflects the unique take and vision of the filmmaker at the helm,” said Kristine Belson, president of Sony Animation, at a press conference this week. “There’s tremendous variety with each movie looking and feeling very different from the next."
Here’s a closer look at what to expect:
Smurfs: The Lost Village (April 7, 2017)
This fresh take on the Smurfs finds Smurfette and friends on an exciting and dangerous journey to find a mysterious village. It’s a race against time as they try and get there before the evil wizard Gargamel. Along the way, they discover the biggest secret in Smurf history.
In previous live-action films, the filmmakers attempted to create Smurfs that were very realistic. Not this time. "I was very insistent that we really capture as much as possible the look and feel of the original comic books by Peyo,” said director Kelly Asbury.
Voice talent for the film includes: Demi Lovato as Smurfette, Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, plus Joe Manganiello, Jack McBrayer, Mandy Patinkin, Ellie Kemper and Julia Roberts.
The Emoji Movie (August 4, 2017)
"Do I have to change who I am for the world to accept me, or can I change the world for the better because of who I am?"
That is the overarching question that prompted director Tony Leondis to tell the story of Gene, a vivacious, multifaceted emoji born different from his peers in Textopolis, who display a single facial expression as they anxiously long to be chosen by their phone's user. Resolved to be "normal," Gene enlists the help of his friend Hi-5 and the infamous code breaker emoji Jailbreak. Together, they set out on an epic "app-venture" through Spotify and Facebook to find the code that will fix Gene.
In front of the emoji movie, Sony will debut the animated short Puppy. Directed by Hotel Transylvania's Genndy Tartakovsky, the short follows the story of Dennis, who wants a puppy. When Mavis and Jonathan deny his request, Dennis goes to Grandpa Drac who surprises him with a giant monster pup.
The Star (November 10, 2017)
Rounding out the year is this holiday movie about a donkey who follows a star shining in the winter sky.
The nativity tale attracted the voice talents of a wide range of stars including: Steven Yeun (Bo the donkey), Kelly Clarkson, (Leah the horse), Keegan-Michael Kristin Chenoweth, Anthony Anderson, Ving Rhames, Kris Kristofferson, Gina Rodriguez, Christopher Plummer and even Oprah Winfrey. "This story is so close to so many people's hearts, and when we went out with our wish list, pretty much everyone signed up,” said producer Devon Franklin.
Hotel Transylvania 3 (September 21, 2018)
Inspired by director Genndy Tartakovsky's recent family cruise, Hotel Transylvania 3 will bring the gang back together again aboard a luxury monster cruise ship. Tartakovsky admitted that he wasn't necessarily a fan of cruises, but, “The one amazing thing that came from it was family."
Untitled Animated Spider-Man (December 21, 2018)
Stan Lee's Spider-Man has been portrayed in a number of films since 1962. His popularity, speculates producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, stems from the fact that anyone can wear that mask and underneath, you can be any race, creed, color and gender, "Everyone can project themselves into that hero," said Lord.
The Spider-Man film will center around the story of Miles Morales, as opposed to the more popular and well-known character Peter Parker. The animated feature fuses CGI with comic book visuals.
Vivo (December 18, 2020)
While still in its early stages, Sony teased the animated musical Vivo, which will feature original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, best known for the musical Hamilton. The film takes audiences on a surprising adventure where the hero travels from Havana to Miami.
