The Green Lantern movie is causing quite the stir online this week, with news that it's heading into production this September with Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) in the director's chair. Word on the street has Star Trek's Chris Pine at the top of the studio’s wish list to play the superhero, but here are five more guys who could easily suit up for the role:
1. Ryan Reynolds – This may become problematic if Fox decides to take Reynolds’ Deadpool character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and go the spin-off route – but if they don’t decide to do that, here’s a guy who looks the part and has superhero experience. Tack on a little of Reynolds’ sly humor and rock-solid abs, and he could make a perfect Green Lantern.
2. Anton Yelchin – Another Star Trek cast member (he plays Chekov in the new film), Yelchin’s name has been tossed around in the past in connection with Hal Jordan, aka the Green Lantern. But is Yelchin built for a superhero role? He’s a little smaller and doesn’t have that A-list presence, but he’s a fine actor and could easily make this film a lot more interesting by adding that bet-you-didn’t-see-that-coming factor.
3. Nathan Fillion – This cult-ish actor is a bit older (he’s 38 and the script is calling for 27), but in the comics Hal Jordan is older and wiser by the time he suits up as the Green Lantern, and so if the studio wanted to make the fans truly happy they’d go with a guy like Fillion – who’s somehow managed to build a giant fanbase for himself based off roles in shows like Serenity and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
4. Sam Worthington – He may not be on your radar yet, but Worthington stars in two giant 2009 films: Terminator Salvation and James Cameron’s Avatar. He’s built like a, well, machine, and he comes in at just the right age (32) to play Hal Jordan. Not only that, but these two 2009 blockbusters will surely make him a household name by the time Lantern slides its way into theaters in December, 2010.
5. Robert Pattinson – Just kidding … well, actually, when you think about it Pattinson is an actor who could potentially add a lot more box office to a superhero movie because the guy has thousands upon thousands of female fans. Surely these girls would line up to see this dude in anything, especially a film that requires him to wear a tight green outfit. So, yeah, we’ll throw Pattinson on this list – why the hell not?
So who did I miss?
